Iron Horse Half Marathon - Training Week 1

One week down, 13 more to go.

I am really liking the training program I'm using this time around. Also, like that I'm upping the ante by moving from the beginner/novice stage to the seasoned runner level. (FYI - I'm using one of Bart Yasso's training plans out of "My Life on the Run" book.)

Found out rather quickly this is the plan for me in order hit my goal of completing the Iron Horse Half Marathon in 2 hours, 15 minutes as I posted weekly best mileage total. And that was just Week No. 1!

So without a further ado, here's how my week went.

Tuesday - 5 miles/53 minutes (10:40 pace)
Today's run was good. Heat was killer with it hitting 73 at 5:30 am. Just took it easy and pushed to get the 5 miles in.

Wednesday - 6.6 miles/1:13 (11:01 pace)
Today's run was a bit rough. First, my stomach was bothering me, doing flip flops and somersaults. So I didn't push it much because of that. Then there was the heat and humidity. It was definitely the soupiest weather I've run in this summer. It was 75 at 5:30 am and was just blarg. Just very glad it was a slow, easy run day because I don't think I could have pushed hard if I wanted to today.

Thursday - 5 miles/56 minutes (11:09 pace)
Slow going due to it beginning hill workout day. Oh and the blister on my toe didn't help matters.

Friday - Rest Day

Saturday - 10 miles/1:41 (10:05 pace)
Had an excellent group run this morning. Was planning to do only 6 miles but I got into a great pace running with Renee S. that I went on and stretched it to 10 miles.

Sunday - 5 miles/56 minutes (11:09 pace)
After yesterday's 10-miler, just did a nice & easy 5 miles. Tomorrow is definitely rest day :-)

Monday - Rest Day

Total mileage for the week was 32.6 miles in a total of 5 hours, 55 minutes.

  1. My goal for the Iron Horse is 2:40. It was brutal last year - I was so unprepared for the hills - and finished right at 3, walking across the finish line with severe calf cramps. I'll run across it this year!

  2. Krissie - Yes, it looks to be a wee bit hilly, which is part of the reason I'm doing more hill work this time around. I'm confident you can do it in 2:40. You've been through it before and know what to expect.
