I had a pretty impressive streak going. It began in June of 2011 and last until October of 2014.
40 months long. Three years and four months.
Oh the streak? What was it?
Only running at least 100 miles a month. With most being at a minimum of 125 miles.
But after my last marathon in October, things changed. Depending on how you look at it, the change could be viewed either good or bad. At the time, I struggled to see the good in it. Yet, having four months to process everything, the change was good.
Very good.

Shooting From The Hip: Conquering My First 50K - The Pistol Ultra
I drank the ultra koolaid, and I LOVED it!
On Saturday (Jan. 3), I conquered my first 50K at the Pistol Ultra in Alcoa, Tenn. And to be quite honest, I'm struggling on writing this post as I can't seem to find all the words to describe what an amazing journey this was.
Words that come to mind when thinking about my experience include: fun, challenging, painful, exhilarating, amazing, mind-blowing, and a party.
Heading into this race, I truly did not know what to expect. I really did not have this race on my radar. Sure, I had thought about running it 3-4 months ago, but I let the idea slide as I focused on my marathon which was on Oct. 25. Then after my rough experience at the Spinx Carolina Marathon, I told myself I wanted to take a break from the long distances for a while. Nothing past 13.1 miles for at least the next six months is what I promised I hold myself to.
I even told my lovely bride that I wasn't going to run a marathon until at least late in 2015 or early 2016. (Technically, I didn't lie.)
But as I noted in a recent post, my friend Chris was trying to get his running mojo back and thought running the Pistol Ultra 50K would do the trick. Consequently, he asked me to join him in the fun.

There's Nothing Like A PR - 2013 Knoxville Marathon Recap
![]() |
| A beautiful morning for a race. Let's do 26.2! |
There! That's my recap!
Now, you know better than that. I love to talk, especially about running. So, sit back because I fear this could get very long.
I went into the 2013 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon with several different goals I wanted to achieve, and I met all but one. And with a little extra work, I might be able to hit that goal next time if everything else comes together like it did for this year's first.
My goals were: 1. finish (check). 2. sub-5 hour time. (check). 3. PR (check). 4. hit 4:45 (not quite). And 5. have fun and enjoy the fun (double check).
In the end, I posted a time of 4:51:11 - 7:32 faster than last year's race (and my first marathon). While I feel I can improve on this, I know I gave it my all because after I crossed the finish line, collected my medal and running hat, I found my beautiful family in the front row of the stands and just collapsed against the padded wall, lying my head on top of the wall.
I had laid it all out on the course. I had nothing left to give. So no regrets on not getting my ultimate goal time for this race of 4:45.

My Running Love Affair
![]() |
| From the folks at Garmin |
With this in mind, I thought I'd share a few of the reasons of why I love running.
I can't take credit for this blog idea being original with me today. I'm sure it's been done hundreds of times over in the past, and I happened to see a post by David H. on his love affair with running this morning. So, a hat tip and a "thank you" to David for this idea.
So without any further ado, here are some of the reasons I love running.

Taking Time To Say Thanks
Nearly four weeks ago, I completed my first marathon. Running is an individual sport, but there is no way I made across the finish line without the help, support and encouragement of others.
It was an amazing journey. Of course, the race is still fresh in my memory, but I believe the 2012 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon will go down as one of my all-time favorite races. And why wouldn't it be? It was my first marathon! I had a truly amazing experience, and I'm ready for more.
But before I get too far away from completing my first and before I begin focusing on my next race adventure, I want to take a moment to take those who helped me get across the finish line. I realize it's impossible for me to name each and every one of you all, and I don't even want to try to list all who were there for me during the journey. There are so many of you I know I would leave someone out. It's inevitable.

Seriously ... Just Go Out And Enjoy The Run
Folks, I have a confession. Now, before I reveal this truth, let me just say it has taken me a lot of soul searching and some wrangling with my emotions.
This was not an easy revelation to come to grips with.
But I've finally accepted this fact. So, without a further ado, here's it is.
I, Jay Stancil, am not and will likely never become an elite runner.
Whew! That felt good to get off my chest.
Truth is, I've never since eternity I'm not an elite runner. Speed has never been one of my strong suits, and the odds of me BQ'ing aren't very good ... until I hit age 80. (Of course, they doesn't I want try to continual improve my times.)
