On Nov. 15, I signed up for my first ultra - a 50K on Jan. 3.
On Nov. 16, I experienced sharp pain going from my foot up through my ankle during my run, turning the planned- 8-, 9-miler into 4.5 miles.
Spent next 48 hours icing and resting my foot. Said foot felt better. Attempted a 7-mile run on a treadmill, which was going well until I hit the 1-hour mark. Pain returned, and my suspicions were confirmed.
I had plantar fasciitis. The dreaded PF.
Training for a 50K which was less than 7 weeks away instantly got interesting. And to be able to complete the 50K, I knew I was going to have to act fast and to replace running with some other cardio activities.

Getting My Mojo Back One Mile At A Time
![]() |
| Evidence of my solid run this morning. |
There wasn't just one thing that caused it but rather a combination of a number of factors which conspired against me.
After posting an incredible 9-minute PR at the Knoxville Marathon in March, things went south for me the following months. Part of it was due to recovering from the marathon, a job change at work was another culprit, tons of travel for work didn't help and the normal course of everyday life factored it.
In fact, the funk had been so bad and lasted so long, I was seriously concerned about things as I began this new training cycle in preparation for the Spinx Carolina Marathon.
Yet, three weeks into training, and I've got my mojo back.

Changing Things Up From The Original Plan
Sometimes life gets in the way of our plans. When this happens, all we can do is reassess, adjust and move forward.
No need to get bitter or upset over it for I don't see a goal denied as the end of the road. For me, a goal denied is merely a goal delayed. Just because I won't be accomplish something right now does not me I won't be able to compete the task somewhere on down the road.
All year I had been saying 2014 was the year I'd become an ultra marathoner. I even went as far as finding a race to get baptized into the ultra world: the Triple Lakes Race - a 40-miler in Greensboro, N.C., in October.
Yet, after number of changes in my life, I am having to put this dream on hold. With my new job and unsure what all it will entail and encompass, I wasn't sure I'd be able to train properly for this race. Also, the 40-miler is a trail race, and I usually can't get on the trails around here until October and November.
But have no fear, I have a race all lined up.

The Slow Road Back
![]() |
| All I want to do is run. |
Just seems like something fun to do.
However, if I am to ever do this, something will have to change because I struggle bouncing back following a marathon.
I have great respect and admiration for those who are able to run marathons, even ultras, in such close succession. I'm in awe of your fitness, grittiness and awesomeness.
Hopefully, one day I can join you.

A PR, Fun With Friends & Another Fantastic Marathon
![]() |
| Haylee and I right after I crossed the line. |
It's the race I want to do every year.
I love it.
After running it for the third year in a row, Knoxville has become THE race I must do. Every year. And I mean: Every. Year.
There are a variety of reasons why I love this race. For one, it's in my backyard. As long as I can remember, I always enjoyed going to Knoxville, and I spent the better part of my college days at nearby Carson-Newman in the city. Secondly, it is a fun and challenging course. Hills. Love the hills. Next, it is so well supported. Every year, it seems more people come out and cheer on the runners. Nothing like a place embracing an event like this.
But the biggest reason I love this race is all the friends I've made in the Knoxville running community. Each year, I've made more friends, making each trip back like a homecoming of sorts. I saw and caught with so many people this year that I would hate to list them all because I know I would forget someone.

Basket Of Nerves: Do You Ever Feel Ready?
![]() |
| Ready to line up under the Sunsphere! |
A lot has gone on with work and life, preventing me from posting here. But as I make final preparations for the Knoxville Marathon, I have the overwhelming need to write because I have so much swimming in my head lately.
To say it's been a wild and wacky training season would be an understatement. So much has happened to try to disrupt things, not the least of these being the wonderful winter weather we experienced. Granted, winter here in Kentucky was not nearly as bad as other parts of the country. Still, it wasn't the norm and made things interesting trying to get my runs in.
But work has been crazy with three week-long road trips interspersed over the past couple of months, making trying to figure out when I can and can't get a run in very interesting.

Halfway There At The Halfway Mark
"You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself.
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go."
- Dr. Seuss "Oh, The Places You'll Go!"Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever had thought I would travel so many miles ... on foot!
Running never had any appeal to me whatsoever. Of course, I blame this largely on playing basketball where my coaches insisted on using running laps - and lots of them - as punishment. Sucked all the joy out of running for me.
Fortunately, I fell in love with running, albeit much later in life. And I've amazed at how much more fun and challenging running has become with each passing mile. Nothing like seeing how far you can go.
Or better yet, how far you've come.

There's Nothing Like A PR - 2013 Knoxville Marathon Recap
![]() |
| A beautiful morning for a race. Let's do 26.2! |
There! That's my recap!
Now, you know better than that. I love to talk, especially about running. So, sit back because I fear this could get very long.
I went into the 2013 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon with several different goals I wanted to achieve, and I met all but one. And with a little extra work, I might be able to hit that goal next time if everything else comes together like it did for this year's first.
My goals were: 1. finish (check). 2. sub-5 hour time. (check). 3. PR (check). 4. hit 4:45 (not quite). And 5. have fun and enjoy the fun (double check).
In the end, I posted a time of 4:51:11 - 7:32 faster than last year's race (and my first marathon). While I feel I can improve on this, I know I gave it my all because after I crossed the finish line, collected my medal and running hat, I found my beautiful family in the front row of the stands and just collapsed against the padded wall, lying my head on top of the wall.
I had laid it all out on the course. I had nothing left to give. So no regrets on not getting my ultimate goal time for this race of 4:45.

A Year Later And I Keep Coming Back For More
Yesterday marked the 1-year anniversary of my first full marathon. It's crazy to think that it's been a year since that amazing day, and it's even crazier to think about how far I've come (and gone) since then.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined I would be running my third marathon in just over a year after my first. (In case I hadn't mentioned it before, I'm running the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon on Sunday.) Heck, I am still in awe I even ran one marathon!
I remember crossing the finish line of my first half marathon, loving the feeling and already planning to run my next half. But one other thought prevailed: "There's no way I'm ever running a full marathon!"
Funny how things change.
Not only do I love the marathon, I love training for a marathon.
And before all of you question my sanity, in the words of the Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper: "I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested."

Is It Race Day Yet?
![]() |
| Scenes from my 22-miler this past weekend. |
As per my normal insanity, I am enjoying marathon training. Call me crazy (FYI, you won't be the first nor the last to do so), but I really do enjoy training. The constant challenge, the upping of the mileage, the tons of miles being logged, hill and tempo workouts.
I mean, what's not to love?
But while I do love training, I am so ready for race day to be here ... LIKE NOW!

A Fun Time Was Had By All - Strawberry Plains Half & 10K Recap
![]() |
| The t-shirt design for this year's race. |
First, this is my first repeat race. Since I began running in April 2010, I had run 10 races, but all of them different events. This was the first time I had run the same race twice.
Secondly, I really enjoyed this race. It's a small race with a beautiful course. It's a challenging course, but fun nonetheless.
Lastly, my bride was running her first 10K!!!
Yes, I've been a bit geeked up about Genople running, but especially with her pushing herself past the 5K and to attempt a 10K.

Oops! I Did It Again

| Road rash is pretty, isn't it? |
Last time I was marathon training, I hit a little 'bump' on the trial. (OK, it was a root.) So, I was really wanting to avoid a situation like that again.
But yesterday, I took a 'trip' down memory lane.
Set out with the plan to run 5 miles and finish at the rec center to do a spin session before running the mile-plus way home. It was a simple, easy plan. What could possibly go wrong you say?
Well, how about another fall?
Yes, I took another tumble. This time, though, it was on the sidewalk.

5 Weeks Down, 11 More To Go - Training Update
I can't believe how fast time flies. Seems just like yesterday I started my training plan for the 2013 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon. Yet, here I am with five weeks under my belt already.
Thus far, I am feeling good about things. My approach this time is more focused as I'm looking to find ways to improve my performance, and more importantly to me, my endurance.
Above everything, I want to be able to remain strong throughout the race. This takes place planning, focus and practice. Slowly but surely, I'm coming to understand it is OK to have a slower, consistent pace at the beginning of a run/race in order to have more in the tank at the end of the run/race.
This is not an easy concept for me to put into practice. Being a bit Type A, I want to go all out from the get go. And this approach wears me out, forcing me to take more and more walk breaks during the final stages of the run/race.

My Impromptu Rest Day
I was planning to do my long run this morning. Just a mere 13 miles or so.
I was mentally prepared to do this; after all, I have ran this distance numerous times, so much so I've lost count.
I was going to mix up my route just to spice things up. To better prepare for the Knoxville Marathon, I was going to add hill or two early in the run and then another one or two hills during the end of the run.
But my body had other ideas.

2012: My Year In Running
Can't believe another year has come and gone.
Time certainly does fly, especially when you're having so much fun!
Heading into 2012, I knew I enjoyed and loved running. I just didn't realize how much I loved it!
And never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd be so enamored with the marathon, and not with the race itself but the training as well! Nothing like pushing yourself to the limits ... and beyond!
Before I review how I did on my 2012 goals, I'd like to share some of my highlights.

My 2012 Races In Photos
2012 was an amazing year for me running-wise.
It has been nothing but incredible. And while I will have a year-in-review post coming in the next few days, I wanted to relive with you my races this year in photos.
It was a low race count for me this year as I ran in only four races. However, two of those were marathons, so the excitement, milestones and sense of accomplishment were high for me.
So without a further ado, let's look back.

Going Back For More ...
Yesterday it began, but today was my first training run for the 2013 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.
Believe it's safe to say I've gone from "never doing that" to a marathon addict rather easily.
Yup, I'm going back for more.
For those keeping track, this will be marathon No. 3 for me. And all three will be within just over one year. (My first was the 2012 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon on April 1, and the 2013 edition is on April 7. So, three 26.2-mile jaunts within 371 days.)

It's Go Time!
Today, the journey to 26.2 miles begins ... again.
My training for the 7 Bridges Marathon gets underway today. And the workout for today was tough: a rest day. (Tough because I WANT TO RUN.)
Rest day aside, training for my second marathon has now commenced, and I can't be more excited about it.
I've spent the past few days laying out my training plan, mapping out when my long runs will be. Let's just say, it's going to get interesting.

When Did I Cross Over To The Dark Side?
I'm not sure when it happened, but it most certainly did. And to be honest, I never saw it coming. In fact, I swore up and down to myself that it wouldn't happen. I was not going to allow it.
But yet, it happened.
I crossed over to the dark side, thinking more and more about running marathons and beyond.
It wasn't so long ago I solely focused on doing as many half marathons I could. Now, the half marathon distance is a nice, long run on weekends.
What has happened to me?

Once Was Not Enough
Guess what, friends? I'm coming back for more.
That's right; I'm signed up and registered for my second full marathon - the 7 Bridges Marathon on October 21 in beautiful Chattanooga, Tenn.
Not going to lie, I'm still processing the fact that I'm putting my body through this again. For those of you who are like me, you realize this was a no-brainer. I had to sign up for another marathon. I ran one, so why not another, right? See, you get my logic.
Truthfully, I had already begun plotting my next marathon even before I ran my first. In the weeks prior to the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon, I started looking for what my next big race would be and when and where I could find a marathon perfect me. Call me crazy, but I really enjoyed all the training for the marathon and was going to miss it.
