National Running Day!

It's National Running Day!

Normally, I'm not a big fan of celebrating created holidays, but this is one I can really get behind and support, and not because I am a runner - although that does help.

No, this is a day that needs to be touted, promoted and so much more, especially since we are living in the 'Age of Obesity.' Should this not be a day that everyone gets the day off from work to go for a nice, long run? I would think so.

According the the National Running Day website, this is what the event is about:
National Running Day, held annually on the first Wednesday in June, is a day when runners everywhere declare their passion for running. Wherever we are and whomever we’re with, we run—fast or slow, alone or with others, all over town or just around the block. It is a coast-to-coast celebration of a sport and activity that’s simple, inexpensive, and fun. It’s the perfect way for longtime runners to reaffirm their love of running and for beginners to kick off a lifetime and life-changing commitment.
I believe this could be a huge gift-giving holiday. Think about it. How awesome would it be to give and receive gifts solely associated with running? Gifts such as running gear or clothes, or perhaps a box of Clif Bars or an assortment box of GU gels. Gift cards for GoSportID, 1BandID and/or RoadID - after all, safety is important. Oh, or how about free race entry fees? Now, that would be an awesome gift.

All kidding aside, I do love this day as it causes me to pause and remember why I love to run.

As my NRD badge up top alludes to, I run to enjoy more of what life has to offer. Sure I run for health and to be fit, but I also run to enjoy life, and running gives me that - life, and more of it.

It's only been a little over two years since I truly became a runner, and I can not express how much my life has changed for the better. I'm in the absolute best shape in my life and I have more energy to do more and more things in life. I talked about this in another blog post, but I love being about to run any number of miles (talking double digits here) and still have more left in the tank to do whatever else is asked and/or needed from me whether from my family or my work. In years past, I would've spent more time whining and complaining about all I had to do. Thanks to running, I've got the energy (and clear mind) to attack whatever comes my way.

I celebrated NRD this morning with a nice 6.5-mile run. Perfect weather, perfect temp. Could not ask for better conditions for a run. A great way to start the day. I'm hoping my day with end with another run with my family.

How better to celebrate National Running Day than sharing the joy and your love of running with others.

Happy running!
